This is a long drawn out post about my experience with trying to get things you really want for the WII. If the WII or the lack of ability of the WII and it's games don't interest you, I suggest you skip this post :) I'm posting this mostly as just a record of the absurtity that Nintendo lack of supply presents to the general consumer.

So back in Feburary, I won a WII on ebay. Paid a bit more for it (about 350 USD after shipping), mainly because I was tired of calling around and looking for one.

Now fast forward two months and Mario Kart WII is released. I've always been a big Mario Kart fan, since the SNES, and I've owned every version, including Double Dash which I just happened to finally buy. So anyways, I see it in stores, and go "meh, I'll grab it later".

Fast forward four more months and I can't find Mario Kart WII anywhere. Calling stores like made, watching ebay, watching craigs list, etc.

Sunday night, I place a bid on a new copy on ebay. At the same time, I search through craigs list and find a used copy. I end up winning the copy on ebay (for way more than it's worth, especially since it had a tricky title and descripion). I tell the guy on craigs list I'm going with the one on ebay since I have to. Also the one on craigs list is used.

I then decide I should go and pick up some of the necessities, two more wiimotes and four wii wheels. I end up hitting target since bestbuy is already closed. Target doesn't have any of the official wii wheels, but they do have the wiimotes. Score. I return home with half the job done and decide to persue the rest on monday on my way home from work.

So here's where the real fun begins...

grim's quest for four wii wheels

So I leave from work (A) at about 4:00PM.

I head to the nearest bestbuy (B). What do you know, they have Mario Kart WII. I say screw it, I've been trying like hell to find this, I found it, I'm getting it. The one I have coming from ebay with either go back up on ebay or be a present to my niece. Unfortunately, this bestbuy doesn't have any official wii wheels.

Current progress: 1 copy of Mario Kart WII, 4 wiimotes, 1 WII Wheel.

Theres a Game Stop close (C), so I head there. Guess what, no official WII Wheels. An employee (who is/was by far the most helpful Game Stop employee I've ever dealt with), offers to call a nearby EB Games and see if they have any. They have one, they're going to hold it. Awesome.

Current progress: 1 copy of Mario Kart WII, 4 wiimotes, 1 WII Wheel.

So I head to EB Games (D). Pick up the WII Wheel. Score.

Current progress: 1 copy of Mario Kart WII, 4 wiimotes, 2 WII Wheels.

Since I'm right by a mall which has another Game Stop (E), I decide to head there. They as well, have one WII Wheel. Grab it.

Current progress: 1 copy of Mario Kart WII, 4 wiimotes, 3 WII Wheels.

I decide that I can't go home when all I need is one more WII Wheel, so I head to the next closest Best Buy (F). What do you know, they're useless and don't have any.

Current progress: 1 copy of Mario Kart WII, 4 wiimotes, 3 WII Wheels.

Since I'm right by another mall which has another Game Stop (G), I decided to head there. Get inside, find the WII accessories, shit they have three on the damn shelf. It's a locking hook, so I ask the guy at the counter for one, and he sends another guy to get one out of the back. So I get my fourth WII Wheel and head home.

Current progress: 1 copy of Mario Kart WII, 4 wiimotes, 4 WII Wheels.

I finally get home around 6:00PM. Tear everything open and finally get to enjoy the damn game.

So what have we learned here? For some reason, Nintendo seems to have a *VERY* difficult time meeting demand. For the consoles I can understand, something can go wrong in production of a chip, pcb, etc. But a game disc?! Come on, it's freaking pressed, they should be chruning the games out. I mean the wheel could take some time to produce, but think about it, it's plastic that is created from a mold...

Anyways, long story short, back order WII stuff online and be patient, or waste time (about 2 hours), gas (about a gallon or so, gotta love good gas milleage), and extra money (I still have a over paid copy coming from ebay) by being impatient.

Since comments are disabled on "Dear Anonymous" I will post this here...

There is no problem with posting non-development things on a development blog; however, I believe the complaints stem from the fact that the feed is what you get when you go to http://pidgin.im/ and click on "News" -- one would expect to see Pidgin-related news there, not random posts about finding Wii equipment.

Right, I completely understand that. But now look at the spam that's been created in my blog because someone couldn't just ignore it... That's the point I was trying to get at in "Dear Anonymous"

For me, it's nice that this was on planet pidgin because it gave me something new to read. Ignore the anonymous spammers I guess, they aren't adding anything to this discussion. Anyway, I feel like sharing my experience with Wii stuff, it's kind of similar to yours.

Last year, in May, my birthday was coming up so I was going to buy a Wii for myself. Being a student with a part-time job tutoring, I had the necessary money, but I couldn't skip school on a weekday to wait for a store to get Wiis in stock. But my dad called around several Gamestops and eventually one of them told him that they'd get their next shipment in on a Friday. Funnily, this happened to be my birthday :D. So my dad just went to that Gamestop in the morning and found a large supply of Wiis and got one for me. I think for anyone still looking for a Wii (which I find preposterous, it's been nearly two years Nintendo...) I'd advise them to be persistent in asking when their next shipment comes in and eventually they'll tell you, and then you're almost guaranteed to get a Wii.

I also wanted to get Mario Kart recently (May of this year, for my birthday again) but I found that somehow even though it had come out several weeks earlier, it was still out of stock in the brick and mortars. Luckily newegg had them in stock so I just ordered from there. I think the Wii Wheel is what's causing the shortages, because otherwise it's just a game they need to print. Even Brawl didn't sell out as far as I could tell, and that seemed to have a lot more anticipation behind it, and several delays.

I find it kind of funny that you went around looking for Wii Wheels though, because personally I find it less accurate than using the analog stick on the nunchuk (sp?). But I guess it just takes getting used to, as it seems the highest records on tournaments and ghosts and stuff often have several Wii Wheel users. I'm just too lazy to spend time learning it though, since I'm used to the analog stick.

So yeah, thanks for developing Pidgin and writing this blog post, it gave me something to do for a while, and Mario Kart Wii rocks! The online is so much better than Brawl's, and I hope future first party titles have at least this much online functionality (for those that online multiplayer makes sense for, of course).

Yeah I ended up getting my wii on ebay for about 340USD with shipping. Which was another disaster in and of itself. It was sent FedEx Ground, they couldn't leave it, everyone was working, I had to have it held and then got stuck in traffic and it took me over 2 hours to get there after work.

But yeah, the whole thing is crazy. And if it is the wheel's causing the delay, it doesn't make sense either, they're just plastic. All I can figure is that Nintendo is waiting for lower oil costs or something to make more. I know that's a long shot, but I don't see them running out of stock of jewel cases. Could be similar for wii fit too. But who knows. All I know is that there has to be something else going on for them to have this kind of shortages. Neither Sony nor Microsoft seem to be having issues...

If you're about to buy something, just check and see if you can save money on it. You can also simply browse for deals, to see if there's something you would buy if only it were cheaper.

Also, combined with this, if you can buy up cheap mince for example, you can make a mammoth portion of chilli cin carne etc, which you can again freeze into portions.

This helps to increase the number of components they can create and reduces cost, but likely has a lower yield, possibly limiting the number available, especially since these parts have only been in production for a few months and have not reached full production maturity; but neither Sony nor Microsoft seems to be having problems getting their systems on the shelf.

I second the sentiments about writing the post and developing Pidgin. It is refreshing to actually see some activity on the ol' RSS feed, although I wouldn't mind seeing someone do a simple one-line "hey you guys, Pidgin x.y.z is out" to alert RSS-reading idiots like me who never actually check pidgin.im.

If we go that route, we should definitely use the anonymous version as the “default” for new users so that they aren’t hit with a massive change in their UI right up front and can then slice and dice however they’d like.

The Reason Nintendo is Having a Problem Meeting Demand

(Link)

It's very simple actually. They have more than enough of the consoles, accessories, and game disks. The reason there has been a shortage in the United States is due to the declining value of the USD. Because of this Nintendo made the decision to shift a majority of their stock of hardware and software from the United States to other countries. It's a much more lucrative set up for them since the USD's value has dropped significantly while other money systems have been stable, they're making much more money per console, game, accessory, whatever. It is quite a pain for the United States consumer though since there is a small supply that disappears quickly and is restocked slowly.

Homebrew on Wii

(Link)

Nice post! I've been using the homebrew info at Wii Homebrew How To (http://nintendo-wii-homebrew-unlock-hack.blogspot.com/).
